Jackie and Alishba Affordable housing
With the primary elections coming up, anyone who is eligible to vote, should. It is very important to be aware of the propositions being proposed. The current cost of living in California is immensely expensive. California is experiencing a severe shortage of affordable housing which may lead to serious consequences of life and death, having a direct negative impact on low incomes families, communities, and individuals. Proposition 1 would build affordable homes for veterans, low-income families, and people with disabilities. Californians are experiencing homelessness at an increasing rate due to the expensive rent rates. Proposition 1 would allow $4 billion in general obligation bonds, to be used toward affordable housing programs and leverage federal dollars for new housing to be built.
I believe the people should Vote YES on Prop 1 because California is in desperate need of affordable housing for all. Veterans, for example, may experience much difficulty trying to purchase or even rent a home once they return from service, therefore we should honor our veterans by aiding them in having a place to stay instead of sleeping on the streets. According to VotersEdge.org, the effect that it would have on our state’s budget is that “Repaying the bonds plus interest would cost the state about $170 million each year for the next 35 years. This amount is about one-tenth of one percent of the state’s current budget. The veterans’ program will be no cost to the state.” The people should support this veterans program if there is no cost to the state. People who are against this proposition believe it would harm taxpayers because all residents would eventually need to pay higher taxes if California keeps borrowing money. Also, people against Prop 1 argue that it would only provide housing for a small number of people, but I believe starting off with a small population is better than ignoring the increasing rate of homelessness altogether.
As a previous Girls State delegate and American Legion Auxiliary Alumni, we were taught to respect and honor our veterans for all that they do for this country, so the least we can do is vote to pass this proposition that would allow them to live safely and comfortably. At the program, we were also taught that it is our duty as citizens to advocate for the homeless and change the harms that come with homelessness, therefore, we can make a change by supporting this proposition, for the safety that comes with a roof over someone’s head should be a basic human right.
